Control Techniques UD52 Overview

Control Techniques UD52

The Control Techniques UD52 SIN-COS encoder small option module stands as a sophisticated interface module designed for installation in a Unidrive. It's important to note that the UD52 is compatible only with drives equipped with version 3 (or later) software, as indicated by Parameter 0.50, which denotes the software version.

Applications and Compatibility:

The primary function of the UD52 is to operate with encoders featuring 256, 512, 1024, 2048, or 4096 lines per revolution, offering a versatile solution for various applications. With a maximum operating frequency of 102.4 kHz, the UD52 can handle high-speed operations, supporting up to 3000 RPM with a 2048-line encoder.

The module finds its place in Drives operating in either Closed-loop Vector or Closed-loop Servo modes, providing accurate speed feedback and exceptionally high-resolution shaft position data. Specifically, the UD52 is fully compatible with Stegmann SIN-COS encoders, including SCS60, SCM60, SCS70, and SCM70. These encoders, equipped with a two-wire serial communications port, seamlessly integrate with the UD52.

Absolute Positioning and Information Display:

One notable feature of the UD52 is its ability to determine the absolute position within a revolution of a single-turn encoder or multiple revolutions of a multi-turn encoder. Unlike standard encoders, which require rotation past their marker pulse for absolute-position information, the UD52 acquires this information during the Drive's power-up. Speed and position information are conveniently displayed in parameters that can be accessed via the Drive display or serial communications.

Encoder Function Selection and Simulation:

Upon fitting the UD52 in the Drive, it automatically utilizes the SIN-COS encoder for motor speed and position feedback. Alternatively, a standard quadrature encoder can be employed for this purpose, with the SIN-COS encoder serving as an incremental reference. The module offers simulated encoder outputs, initially utilizing the SIN-COS encoder as the source but allowing reconfiguration to use the main encoder connected to the 15-way D-type on the Drive. These outputs generate quadrature A/B signals corresponding to line counts, configurable for frequency and direction (F/D) signals.

Installation and Connectivity:

For installation, the UD52 must be fitted into the small option module bay of the Unidrive. All connections to the Drive are efficiently managed through a multi-way connector, providing a streamlined and organized setup. External equipment connections are facilitated by a pluggable 16-way screw-terminal block on the UD52, ensuring ease of integration into larger automation systems.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the primary purpose of the Control Techniques UD52 module?

  • A: The UD52 is a SIN-COS encoder small option module designed for installation in a Unidrive. It provides accurate speed feedback and high-resolution shaft position data for applications in Closed-loop Vector or Closed-loop Servo modes.

Q: What software version is required for compatibility with the UD52?

  • A: The UD52 is compatible only with drives equipped with version 3 (or later) software, as indicated by Parameter 0.50.

Q: What encoders are compatible with the UD52, and what are the supported line counts?

  • A: The UD52 operates with Stegmann SIN-COS encoders such as SCS60, SCM60, SCS70, and SCM70. It supports encoders with 256, 512, 1024, 2048, or 4096 lines per revolution.

Q: Can the UD52 determine the absolute shaft position?

  • A: Yes, the UD52 can determine the absolute position within a revolution of a single-turn encoder or in multiple revolutions of a multi-turn encoder. This information is obtained during the Drive's power-up.

Q: How is speed and position information displayed with the UD52?

  • A: Speed and position information are displayed in parameters that can be read on the Drive display and/or via serial communications.

Q: Can I use a standard quadrature encoder with the UD52?

  • A: Yes, the UD52 can automatically use the SIN-COS encoder for speed and position feedback or a standard quadrature encoder can be employed, with the SIN-COS encoder serving as an incremental reference.

Q: What simulated encoder outputs does the UD52 offer?

  • A: The UD52 provides simulated encoder outputs using the SIN-COS encoder as the source, but they can be reconfigured to use the main encoder (Encoder 1) connected to the 15-way D-type on the Drive.

Q: How is the UD52 installed, and what are the connectivity options?

  • A: The UD52 must be fitted into the small option module bay of the Unidrive. All connections to the Drive are made via a multi-way connector, and connections from external equipment are facilitated by a pluggable 16-way screw-terminal block on the UD52.
